With the growth of internet more and more companies need to have a website to reach new customers. Plus a lot of startups are now only offering online service therefore it is important for them to have a good website dedicated to it. Web developer are needed to build these websites whether they are complex with several pages and content or small static websites
People usually confuse web designer and web developer but a web designer’s job is to create the visual aspect of the web site whereas the web developer’s job is to build the website using special programming languages. A web developer is closer to a software engineer with a good understanding of the internet. A web developer will build application which will be usable from a browser. We can distinguish two parts in a web developer’s career: back end developer and front end developer
The front developer takes care of the front part of the website: he will have to integrate the design done by the web designer in order to show a clean layout for regular users. Programming skills required are to have good skills in html, css and javascript in order to display text, images and animations properly in the user’s browsers. As they are many browsers and resolutions (depending on the size of the screen) it is a very challenging job.
On the other side of the website we have the back developer who works on the administration part of the website where the administrator can add content to his website. For example if it’s an e-commerce website he has to manage his products and sales, if it’s a community a website he has to manage users and comments and if it’s a blog he has to add articles. The usual programming languages used are php or .net but there are several other languages which can be used to do so.
To start a web developer’s career you’ll have to take a BS or a MS in computer science some professional experience will also be required to prove you have already worked with online projects. If you prefer to learn on your own there are several books which can teach you the basics of web development with some practice you can become good fairly rapidly. You can also find many resources on the internet such as tutorials, podcasts, screencasts…
Starting your web developer you’ll be able to apply for a junior developer’s position but with a few years of experience you’ll be able to ask for more as a senior developer. If you feel like managing a team of developers, and being to think the bigger pictures then you are also capable to become a technical director and work on larger projects.
There are three working opportunities:
- Working for a company which has an online service powered by their website. You’ll always be working on the same project in order to improve it
- Working for a web agency where you will be working for many clients and you’ll have a large variety of projects instead of always working on the same one
- Working as a freelance, you will usually work for clients or web agencies in order to support them
We can say that the internet job industry is actively recruiting
